This is an antique pocket compass sundial, housed in a turned treen case, & dating to the latter half of the 19th Century. The turned boxwood case is circular in form, with a concave edge, & a domed lid with a turned detail to the top. The lid is a push fit. The dial is made from paper / card, with a brass ? gnomon. The underside of the dial has the balancing weight / pin housing, held in place via two strips of heavy woven paper, & some blobs of green sealing wax, probably used to balance the dial. The dial sits on a central brass pin, fitted to the base of the box. The interior of the lid has a paper month adjustment chart. Condition is good, with no cracks or chips to the case, only light rubbing to the month adjustment chart, & an old (but much later) ink dealers ? price to the base. The compass spins but I cannot guarantee any form of accuracy. The compass measures approx 2" in diameter & approx 1 1/4" in height (highest point), or approx 5.2cm & 3.2cm. Overall, a nice & original 19th Century pocket compass sundial.
