WW1 RFC Mk V 30hr Non Luminous Cockpit Watch

This is an original World War 1 Royal Flying Corps Mk V 30 hour non luminous cockpit watch, by the Record Watch Co, & dating to around c.1916.

These watches were issued to the RFC pilots during the First World War and were used as aircraft cockpit clocks.

The watch is in working condition and has a Pure Nickel case, a snap on back, a hinged dust cover & a thick bevelled glass.

The dial, which has a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o'clock, is marked 30 HOUR / NON LUMINOUS / MARK V & has the code B.H. 3593.

The case back is marked with the military arrow (crows foot) underneath A, whilst the engine turned interior is marked PURE NICKEL / R.W (Record Watch).

The dust cover is unmarked & the movement, although unsigned, is thought to be a Record 15 jewel compensation balance wheel movement (please see photos).

The pendant has been drilled for a bow (originally manufactured without a bow, most have now been adapted as pocket watches).

CONDITION : The main point is that the subsidiary dial hand is missing & the glass has scratches (as would be expected on an original example). The face is Fine with no damage or restoration & the Nickel case is Good, with no bruising (the pendant has a few marks where it has been gripped whilst drilling).

The movement is running & keeping great time, although as with all vintage watches, a service is recommended. I partially wound the watch (30 half turns) & it ran for 25 hours keeping accurate time (give or take a minute or so).

The watch has a diameter of just over 2" (approx 5.2cm) excluding the crown.
