This is a Victorian era figural cigar or cheroot cutter in the form of a Champagne bottle, probably of European manufacture, and dating to circa.1890. Normally, to operate this type of cutter, the top (designed as a foil covered cork with a hasp to attach to an Albert chain), is turned which releases the spring loaded 'label'/cutter. The cigar is then placed in the bottom of the bottle & the label is depressed. On this particular cutter, the spring has lost it's compression (not surprising after 117 Years), but can still be operated manually - this in no way detracts from this scarce cutter. The label is impressed with 'VEUVE CLIQUOT', the famous Champagne House founded in 1805 & still one of the most prestigious Houses today. This cutter was a promotional or advertising piece, probably given to wine merchant's or good (wealthy) customers, around 1890. The name impressed is Veuve Cliquot, not Clicquot - this was a common oversight & still happens today The cutter is constructed of Brass & Steel & is in fine original condition (please see note Re: spring above). Dimensions are approx 5cm tall & 1.2cm wide (at base). |
