This is a World War One tin plate & celluloid match box cover or grip, of British manufacture, and dated to 1915. The front of the case is entitled 'THESE COLOURS WILL NOT RUN', & shows a shield with the Union Flag in front of 5 Allies flags (from R to L) : Belgium Russian Empire (the case dates from 1915, 2 years before the Revolution) France Kingdom of Montenegro (I could be wrong on this one, they were certainly Allies during this period & it is the only flag that matches.) Japan (the flag shown is the Imperial Japanese Navy) Underneath the scroll reads 'Copyright' & 'British Made' The spine of the case reads 'Souviner of the GREAT WAR 1914 - 1915. The reverse of the case reads 'The Edmonton Green Committee - in aid of the Wounded Soldiers Fund', & lists the committee members (please see photo). Similar holders can be found on page 100 in the Schiffer 'Book of Match Holders' Condition is fantastic for age, there is a slight scorch mark on the top L/H corner, & a small piece of celluloid missing from the bottom of the front cover (again , please see photo's). Dimensions are approx 6cm x 4cm x 2cm. |
