This is a late Victorian / early Edwardian nickel on brass, combination matchsafe, stamp holder, & sovereign holder, dating to around the 1890's to the early 1900's. The top of the case has a striker & hinges open to reveal the vesta compartment. The other end hinges open to reveal a stamp holder (in the top of the lid), & a sprung sovereign or coin holder. There is a suspension ring halfway along the side of the case to enable it to be attached to an Albert chain. The vesta lid is hinged but not sprung & opens / closes tightly. The opening on the sovereign compartment is very tight & the sprung holder (with 1£ embossed on it) is perfect. There is visible soldering at each end of all hinges / openings, which was the original finish. Condition is very good for age : there is some plate loss (as would be expected from a vesta of this age), & there is some sideways play on the vesta lid, but no damage. The case measures approx 7cm long & 3cm wide. All in all, a nice original combination match safe, in good condition for it's 100 + years.
