This is a large Irish sterling silver serving fork, made during the reign of George IV (1820 - 1830), and fully hallmarked for Dublin 1825. The fork is of the 'Fiddle' pattern, & is of a very heavy gauge. The fork is unusual in that it has been struck with two different makers marks, Edward Twycross & Charles Marsh, who both worked in Dublin during the 1st half of the 19th century. The hallmarks are top struck & consist of the George IV head (duty mark), Hibernia (Dublin), the Harp Crowned (925 sterling), the date letter 'E' (1825 - September 1825, the date letter changed from E to e in Sept 1825), & the makers marks of CM (Charles Marsh) & TWY+ (Edward Twycross). The condition is excellent, the tines are perfect & the hallmarks are good (makers marks are slightly rubbed). The finial is engraved with the initials HM. DIMENSIONS : the fork measures approx 21.5cm (slightly under 8.5"). WEIGHT : the weight is approx 74.5g, 2.63 oz, or 2.4 Troy. |
