This is a late Georgian balance cock, from an English verge fusee movement pocket watch, which has been converted into a brooch around the late Georgian / early Victorian period. Balance cocks on verge watches have always been considered a work of art in their own right and, when the watch stopped working, the cock was often turned into a piece of jewllery. This cock, made of heavily Gilded brass, has a beautifully moulded & pierced foliate design, with a flower 'endstone' and a pierced bird underneath. The cock has had a hinge, fitted with a steel pin, & a 'c' clasp soldered onto the back, to convert it into a brooch. The brooch measures approx 3.5 cm in length, & 2 cm wide (at the widest part). Condition is excellent, the gilding & piercing are amazing & the hinge / clasp are fine - fantastic for it's 200 odd years.
