This is a Brass figural novelty vesta or matchsafe in the form of a Deer's leg or hoof, of European (possibly German) origin, and dating to around 1890. The hinged cap is opened via a push button on the front of the case & the striker is on the base of the hoof. A similar case can be seen in the 'Schiffer Book of Match Holders', page 69, Fig 247. Condition of the case is great, there are some slight surface marks & slight rubbing around the button. The hinge is fine, as is the button, although the lid is not held by the spring very tightly (as would be expected on a genuine 118 year old case). The case measures approx 5.7cm in Length and 1.5cm wide (at the lid). As with all our items, this case is fully guaranteed to be 100% original & of the date stated. |
