This is a late Victorian figural needle case, carved from cow bone in the form of a parasol or umbrella, with a multiple image stanhope set into the handle, and dating to around 1880 - 90. The nicely turned handle of the parasol unscrews to reveal a compartment used for keeping needles, etc. The top of the handle has a stanhope view entitled 'SOUVINER OF KESWICK' (& the small number 251), & has views of 'DERWENTWATER' 'KESWICK' 'FRIARS CRAG - KESWICK' LORDS AND ISLAND - SKIDDAW' 'BOWDE STONE - BORROWDALE' 'LODORE FALLS' Keswick was a popular popular holiday destination in the 19th century, & is situated in the Lake District. Condition is great for its age : there is a little piece of the tip of the parasol missing. The screw fitting is perfect & the stanhope views are clear (the circumference of the stanhope is obscured, which is due to age & does not affect the images). The total length is approx 4 1/4" or approx 10.8 cm. |
