Geo V Solid Silver Vesta Match Safe:Mappin & Webb 1919

This is a George V solid Silver vesta case or matchsafe, by the illustrious silversmiths Mappin & Webb, & fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1919.

The case is rectangular in form, & has been decorated to both front & rear with a vertical, engine turned design, with the front of the case having a circular, vacant cartouche.

The case has a hinged, canted lid, an inset, concave striker, & one edge has a fixed loop with an attached suspension ring to enable attachment to an Albert or watch chain, etc.

The case is fully hallmarked to the interior lip with the makers mark 'MN WB over &' (for Mappin & Webb Ltd), the Anchor (Birmingham), the Lion Passant (925 Sterling), & the date letter 'u' (1919 - 20). The Lion Passant & the date letter are repeated on the front of the lid.

Condition is Fine, there are 2 extremely tiny marks just below the cartouche, & the spring, hinge, & closure are extremely strong: fantastic for it's 89 years - please see magnified photos.

The vesta measures approx 1 3/4" long, & just under 1 3/8" wide (excluding the suspension ring), approx 4.5 cm x 3.3 cm.

The weight is 23.4 g, or 0.83 oz.

Overall, a fine vesta from an illustrious & world famous maker.
