This is a figural porcelain match holder / striker, in the form of a top hat, & almost certainly made in Europe during the late 19th Century, around 1880 - 90. The 'hat' has been made with an applied 'rim', as opposed to a one piece construction The rim of the hat has a dark cream glaze with applied Gilt floral / foliate decoration on top, & a dark green glaze underneath which extends to the body of the hat, again with Gilt edging & applied Gilt decoration. The front of the holder has a transfer print depicting a garden scene with a young courting couple in the foreground, & a Lady happening upon them in the background. The bottom of the transfer extends to the base. The top of the hat (the underside as it sits) is unglazed & ribbed, to act as the striker. Condition is Fine, with no chips, hairlines, or restoration. The Gilt decoration is rubbed in parts, as would be expected. The holder sits approx 1 1/2" or 3.8 cm high (in the centre), with the rim being approx 2 1/2" or 6.5 cm (at the widest point). |
