This is a glazed ceramic 'ball stand' match holder / striker, probably of British origin, & dating to the early part of the 20th Century. The stand is spherical in form, with a well in the top to hold the matches, & an impressed vertical panel on one side, which is ribbed so to act as a striking panel. The holder is decorated to the front with a hand tinted, transfer print of three Welsh ? Ladies sitting down, with a hill scene in the background, which is continued around the circumference of the holder. The base is unglazed. Condition is Fine, I don't think the striking panel has ever seen a match. The only thing to note is that a little part of the transfer has been rubbed (behind the L/H side Lady), probably during manufacture. The holder is approx 2 1/4" in diameter, & stands approx 1 7/8" high (approx 5.8 cm x 4.7 cm). |
