This is an Edwardian Silver combination sealing wax holder & vesta or match safe, by the silversmith Henry Stuart Brown, & fully hallmarked (in three places) for London 1903. The holder has a sliding mechanism to enable the sealing wax stick to be propelled forward as it shortens with use. The holder is in the form of a rectangular tube, open at one end, & with a slot running lengthways along the top. The wax is inserted into the holder where it sits on an interior base plate, which is connected to the vesta case, thus the wax can be pushed forward by means of sliding the vesta case along the slot. The open end of the holder has an applied, reeded border, & a steel striking panel on one edge. The attached vesta case has a hinged lid & a gilded interior. The holder is fully hallmarked to one end with the makers mark 'HSB' (Henry Stuart Brown), the Lion Passant (925 Sterling), the Leopards head (London), & the date letter 'h' (1903 - 04). The makers mark, Lion Passant, & date letter are repeated to the interior lid of the vesta, whilst the makers mark, Lion Passant, & Leopards head are repeated to the interior base of the vesta. Condition is Fine for it's 106 years, with no damage, dents, or repairs. The sliding mechanism is smooth. The holder measures approx 5 1/2" in length (approx 14 cm), & weighs 55.5 g, 1.96 oz, or 1.78 Troy. Overall, an extremely scarce Edwardian Silver desktop combination, in fantastic condition.
