This is a Victorian era metal vesta case or match safe, with an enamel crest depicting the seven provinces that made up Canada at that period, & dating to circa 1900. The vesta is rectangular in form with a plated Gunmetal finish, & has a sprung, hinged lid & an attached suspension loop to one side to enable hanging from an Albert or watch chain etc. The applied crest is shield shaped with a scrolled, decorative border, & is surmounted with a crown in red, blue, green, yellow, & white enamels. The flags depicted on the crest are (from L to R, Top to Bottom) : ONTARIO QUEBEC NOVA SCOTIA (Thistles & Fish) MANITOBA NEW BRUNSWICK BRITISH COLUMBIA (not sure about this one) and EDWARD ISLAND. Condition is structurally sound & fairly good for it's 110 odd years, the lid, hinge, & spring are fine (if a little stiff) & the enamel is fine, with no loss. The Gunmetal finish is worn in places, most noticeably around the edges & there are spots of pitting to the body, particularly around the striker which is very corroded although there are no splits, holes, or cracks - Please see magnified photos. The case measures approx 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" (approx 6cm x 3.8 cm). Overall, a nice, early Canadian case.
