Mauchline Secret Hidden Trick Opening Money Box Bank

This is a Victorian Mauchline Ware secret opening money box, in the Black Lacquer Ware finish, & dating to around 1880.

The top of the box is decorated with a chromolithographic print consisting of a transfer print of DENBIGH CASTLE surrounded by a wreath of Ivy, with a swallow or bluebird to the left hand side. The print is affixed to the top of the box so that it stands slightly proud of the surface.

Each side of the box is decorated with two vertical & two horizontal grooves, with the front of the box having a coin slot.

The base of the box is covered in a dark green 'morocco' paper.

Even on close inspection, there is no obvious means to open the box but, if the bottom of the left hand side of the box (around 3/8" in from the edge) is pressed hard, a secret panel swings open on a hidden hinge, allowing you to retrieve the contents.

Condition of the box is extremely good for it's 130 odd years, with the secret opening being very tight & having a very strong hinge. The chromolithograph is complete & in Fine condition with only light, age related crazing. The black lacquer finish is Fine, with only light rubbing to the corners, a small gold coloured mark to the back, & a shallow bruise and rubbing at the hinge end of the secret panel (as would be expected). The paper base covering is very worn - please see magnified photos.

The box measures approx 2 7/8" long, 2 1/4" wide, & 1 5/8" high (approx 7.3cm x 5.7cm x 4.8cm).

Overall, a fantastic little bank, with a lovely print of Denbigh Castle (in North Wales), & in Fine condition, considering that these secret money boxes were often 'attacked' by children using all manner of implements to try & open the box to retrieve the contents !.
