This is a very large (13"), original Art Nouveau / Jugendstil Wine or Claret Jug, made of Brass & Pewter by WMF and fully marked (including the 1st WMF 'ostrich' impressed mark), & dating to 1907. This jug is one of a range of wine jugs that featured on page 140 of the famous 1906 WMF catalogue. The jug, which has a wide base & tapers towards the top, is decorated with a wide band of impressed, Art Nouveau stylised floral (almost shell like) designs, with a band of fluting below & two bands of fluting towards the top. The pewter handle (with hinged pewter thumb lift for the lid) has a stylised floral design to both sides, & the pewter spout is decorated with a band of stylised 'figure of eights'. The jug has two unobtrusive inscriptions, one below the spout consisting of the letter 'A' ? in script followed by an exclamation mark, & one below the handle which reads (in gothic style Germanic script) 'Die A.A.V. Vitruvia', i/1 A.h., K.Elkart, 21 Sept. 1907'. The jug was almost certainly plated at one point (as can be seen on the base & by the factory marks) but this has been professionally polished at some point in the distant past, as there is no trace of plate or wear at all. The base is fully marked with the 1st WMF mark (an ostrich over WMF over G in a lozenge, & enclosed in a shaded square. Used from 1880 - 1925), 'OX' in a square (oxidized), & 1/0 in a square (1 gram of Silver over 1 decimetre square). Condition of the jug is good for it's 103 years, with only one very small, shallow bruise (felt rather than seen) to one side, & small spots of tarnishing all over, particularly around the base. The hinged lid has some sideways play & one side of the lid is bent slightly upwards, so will not sit flush - absolutely nothing that cant be corrected (if so wished) but please see photos. The jug measures approx 13 1/8" in height to the top of the handle (33.3cm), & has a diameter of approx 5" (12.7cm) at the base. The jug weighs over 1kg unpacked, so pick up in the Edinburgh / W Lothian area is welcome (delivery within the above area is available - please phone).
