WWII German 835 Silver Cigarette Case: Pforzheim 1943

This is a World War 2 era, German 835 standard Silver cigarette case, made by the silversmith Robert Kraft of Pforzheim & carrying full German hallmarks including the 'Laurin' guarantee mark, and with an interesting interior dedication which dates the case to around 1943.

The case is rectangular in form, and is decorated to the front with a stunning chased scrolling foliate design & with a small rectangular cartouche to the bottom right which has been engraved with the initials 'F' and 'E' at either side of a Lyre (or similar instrument). The rear of the case has an engine turned decoration.

The case is opened via a sprung push button to one side, & hinges open to reveal a gilded interior.

The interior is engraved with the following dedication:

Zur Erinnerung

an Händels Feldherr

und Verdis Requiem

Gewidmet in treuer Sängerkameradschaft

vom Reichenberger Männerchor 1845

Reichenberg 17.6.1943,

which (very roughly) translates as 'In memory of Handels Feldherr & Verdis Requiem, faithfully dedicated to the singer fellowship? of the Reichenberger male choir 1845, Reichenberg (which is now known as Liberec, Czech Republic).

The case is fully hallmarked to the interior lip with '835' (835 standard Silver), the reichsmark (Halbmonde und Krone), the makers mark 'RK' (Robert Kraft, who worked in Pforzheim from c.1900 - 40), & the 'Laurin' mark (Ln in a semi-circle). The 'Laurin' was a mark, introduced in 1934, to guarantee the quality of design of jewellery etc, but was discontinued a few years later.

Condition is Fine. The only thing to note is that there are a few very light & very shallow bruises to the rear of the case (does not detract in any way & probaby due to the engraved dedication)

The case measures approx 3 1/2" x 3" (approx 8.9cm x 7.6cm), & weighs 80.4 g, 2.84 oz, or 2.58 Troy.
