Edwardian Chased Silver Cigarette Card Case: 1907

This is an Edwardian hand chased Silver cigarette case, by the silversmiths Smith & Bartlam, & fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1907.

The case has a curved, concave back to enable fitting into a pocket etc, & has been hand chased to the front & rear with a scrolling floral / foliate design. The front of the case also has a large, vacant, shield shaped cartouche.

The case is opened via a sprung push button & lift to one side, & opens to reveal a Gilded interior, with 2 lugs at either side designed to hold an elastic retaining strap (not present). The interior gilding is rubbed.

The case is fully hallmarked to the interior with the makers mark 'S & Bm' (for Smith & Bartlam), the lion passant (925 sterling), the anchor (Birmingham), & the date letter 'h'(1907 - 08). The lion passant & date letter are repeated on the other side of the case.

Condition is fair, there is the normal, very slight undulation to the surface (which is a result of hand chasing) & there is a 2cm split along the chased border to the front (hard to see & does not affect the case in any way).

The case measures approx 3 1/8" by 2 1/8" (approx 8cm x 5.3cm) and weighs 50.8 g, 1.79 oz, or 1.63 Troy.
