French Silver Art Nouveau 'Water Lily' Vesta: c1900

This is a stunning hallmarked French Silver Art Nouveau vesta case or matchsafe with a repousse 'Water Lily' decoration, by the Paris silversmith Charles Murat, & dating to the end of the 19th Century, around 1900.

The case is rectangular in form, with a hinged lid & an unusual, inset striker.

Both sides of the case have an absolutely stunning, high relief repousse 'Water Lily' design which has been done in a style typical of the Art Nouveau period, with organic, whiplash lines.

The lid of the case hinges open via a thumb lift, to reveal a Gilt interior. The striker consists of a serrated bar inset between the concave edges of the base.

The case is fully hallmarked to the interior lip with 'DEPOSE' (French patent or registered design), the makers mark consisting of a lozenge containing a 'berry with two leaves' & the initials 'C' & 'M' (for Charles Murat, 62 Rue des Archives, Paris, who was active from 1897), & the double struck 'Crab' mark (French Small Guarantee Silver mark for at least 800 standard Silver).

The case has the most wonderful patina which I have left alone (although case would easily polish up, if desired).

Condition is Fine, with a perfect closure, hinge, & striker. The only point to note is a tiny bruise on the corner of the lid (just above the thumb lift - please see photo 3).

The case measures approx 1 3/4" x 1 1/4" (approx 4.5cm x 3cm).

Overall, a simply stunning example of an Art Nouveau period vesta, by a renowned French silversmith, & in Fine condition - easily one of the nicest cases I've had the pleasure of handling.
