This is one of a number of vestas / match safes that we are currently listing. This is a figural advertising match holder/striker or table vesta, made of brass for the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company, & dating to around the 1920's / 30's. The large holder is in the form of a free standing electric 'Cosmos' radiant fire. The front of the fire has a decorative frame with an Art Nouveau detail to the top, a planished interior compartment (to simulate the radiant heat?), and a swivel 'grate' with a crosshatch design & the company logo (an intertwined M&V in a circle) to the top & a striking surface underneath. The sides of the fire have attached scroll feet, with the R/H side having a cast 'ON' knob. The rear of the fire has a cast 'carrying handle' & is impressed with 'COSMOS RADIANT FIRE' & the company logo. The matches would be stored in the interior 'fire' compartment, whilst the grate swivels upwards to reveal a striking surface. The holder is extremely well made, with a total of 10 screws used in it's construction, & was almost certainly made for use in 'Cosmos' retailers showrooms. Condition is Fine, with no damage. The holder is large at approx 4 1/4" high & 4 3/4" at it's widest point (approx 10.3cm x 12cm), and weighs over 0.6 Kg.
