Georgian Gold & Hair Mourning Brooch Pin inscribed 1817

This is an English, George III period mourning brooch or pin, made from yellow Gold & with the hairwork under glass, and dating to 1817.

The brooch is rectangular in form, with a hinged pin & 'C' clasp fixing.

The front of the brooch has a high relief & finely cast scalloped border & a centrally mounted, Acanthus scroll frame, into which, is set a Gold framed, bevelled edge crystal. The dark blonde hair has been woven / plaited & mounted under the crystal.

The rear of the brooch has been engraved in period script with 'Jn? Roberts - Died Feb '90 - 1813 AE 65' (the AE, for age, is in co-joined block).

Condition is Fine, with only a couple of light marks to the rear - fantastic for it's 193 years.

The brooch measures approx 7/8" x 5/8" (approx 2.3cm x 1.7cm), & weighs 4.0 grammes.
