This is an original Art Deco period solid Silver Cigarette case, by the silversmiths Williams (Birmingham) Ltd, & fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1926. The case is rectangular (although, almost square) in form, with a pronounced, curved profile to ensure a comfortable fit in a pocket, etc. The case has bevelled edges to both sides & is decorated with a 'wave' pattern engine turned engraving to the front & rear, & a 'honeycomb' engine turned pattern to the edges. The top L/H corner of the case has a rectangular cartouche with the engraved initials AL or AC. The case is opened via a sprung push button, to reveal a Gilt interior, with two lugs to hold an elastic retaining strap (not present). The case is fully hallmarked to one side of the interior with the makers mark 'WB over LD' in a heart cartouche (Williams (Birmingham) Ltd, who only traded between 1902 & 1929), the anchor (Birmingham), the lion passant (925 Sterling), & the date letter 'B' (1926 - 27). The lion passant & date letter are repeated on the opposite side, & the push button bears the lion passant. Condition is Very Good. The front has a couple of light surface marks & two very small, very shallow depressions (felt, rather than seen) & the makers mark is rubbed - fine for it's 84 years. The closure & sprung button are fine. The case measures approx 3 1/4" x 3 3/8" (approx 8.2cm x 8.5cm), & weighs 97.1 g, 3.43 oz, or 3.12 Troy.
