This is a matching pair of late Victorian silver plate salt & pepper pots, in the form of cats or kittens with relief moulded detail, & dating to around 1890 - 1900. Each shaker is in the form of a cat, sitting upright on it's haunches, with a ribbon around it's neck & wearing an amusing expression on it's face. The cats are very much in the style of the early Louis Wain 'conventional' cats. Each cat's head pulls off to allow access to the hollow body. The heads have a deep, interior lip & each is pierced to the top; the salt with one hole, & the pepper with five holes. Each cat is embossed with 'EPNS' to the base of the back. Condition is very good, with tight fitting lids & no plate loss. There is very light wear to the bases & light rubbing to the detailing on the extremities. The pepperette has a tiny & shallow bruise to the head (felt rather than seen). Each cat sits approx 1 7/8" high (approx 4.9cm). Overall, a lovely novelty pair of Victorian shakers, in fine condition. |
