This is a watercolour loch / landscape by the listed Scottish artist Mrs Ethel Craig, entitled Head of Loch Fyne & with an auction label verso, & dating to around the 1930's. Ethel Craig was a Glasgow painter of still life, topographical subjects, & landscapes. She exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1932 & 1944, and also at the Glasgow Institute (5 times) between 1917 & 1938, & at the AAS in 1935. She is the mother of Miss Ethel Craig, also a listed artist. The watercolour, a view overlooking the head of Loch Fyne, is framed & mounted under glass. The watercolour is signed to the lower right, with the title hand written verso (the frame is later, so the title was almost certainly written by an owner who recognised the image, & is not necessarily the intended or original title, if there was one). Condition of the painting is fairly good, with light foxing to the upper half. The later frame is fairly good. The visible image measures approx 13 3/4" x 10" (approx 34.9cm x 25.4cm), whilst the frame is approx 19" x 15" (approx 48.5cm x 38.4cm). |
