This is a signed Oil on Canvas landscape / architectural study entitled 'THE OLD MILL - EAST LINTON', by the listed Scottish artist William J Hargreaves, & dated 1912.

The painting, on a stretched canvas, shows a study of Preston Mill, an old watermill, on the outskirts of East Linton (in East Lothian, Scotland). There has been a mill on the site since 1599, and it is still working. Attached to the watermill is a kiln, with a cowl of local design.

The canvas is signed & titled verso, & the frame bears the original framers label of Alex Drysdale, Fredrick St, Edinburgh.

William J Hargreaves, who resided in Juniper Green, Edinburgh, was a listed Scottish artist, whose exhibits include one work at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1935.

The painting is in good condition, with light crazing, & would possibly benefit from a light clean. The painting is mounted under glass in an ornate gilt frame. The original frame is in fair condition, with a piece of moulding missing to the front & some inactive worm holes to the rear.

The framed dimensions are approx 24 3/4" x 20 3/4" (approx 63 x 52.7 cm), whilst the canvas is approx 18" x 14" (approx 45.7 x 35.5 cm).
