This is a Victorian figural vesta or match safe, made of plated brass and almost certainly of European origin, & dating to around 1890. The case is in the form of a 'Gladstone' bag , and features a hinged side opening & a ribbed striking surface to the base. The case is nicely detailed, with the original soldered handle and an embossed twin belt & buckle decoration. One edge of the case is hinged (at the bottom), & hinges forward to reveal the compartment for storing matches or vestas. The 'Gladstone' bag is a small portmanteau suitcase, & was named after the four times British Prime Minister, William Gladstone (1809 - 98), who was noted for the amount of travelling that he did. An example of this particular vesta case can be found on page 72 in the Schiffer / Alsford book 'Match Holders'. Condition is Good, with a fine hinge & closure. The plating is rubbed (as would be expected after 120 years), & there is a tiny 'pinhead' bruise to one side - please see magnified photos. The case stands approx 1 3/8" high (approx 3cm) including the handle, & is approx 2" in length (approx 5.1cm). Overall, a scarce Victorian novelty vesta case, in lovely condition for it's 120 years.
