This is a Victorian figural vesta or match safe, made of plated brass and probably of European origin, & dating to around 1890. The case is in the form of a twin blade pen or pocket knife , and features a hinged end opening & a rough striking surface to both sides of the 'handle'. The vesta is very detailed, with twin steel fixed 'blades' (which even feature a 'nail nick'), & textured scales. Please note that the 'blades' do not open. One end of the case hinges forward to reveal the compartment for storing matches or vestas. An example of this particular vesta case can be found on page 146 in the Schiffer / Sanders book 'Pocket Matchsafes', which also notes that a Sterling Silver version of this case was made in the USA by the Gorham Co. Condition is Fine, with a good hinge & closure. The only point to note is that, as would be expected after 120 years, the plating has worn. The case measures approx 2 3/8" long and 1" wide (approx 6cm x 2.5cm). Overall, an extremely scarce Victorian novelty vesta case, in lovely condition for it's 120 years.
